You can view or download this year's Wandsworth Common Beer Festival (WCBF) Programme Guide below – this lists all the great beers and ciders we will have on cask (and tap) for you. This is in 2 parts as a pdf. Please note there will be some additional beers at the Festival not listed in the guide such as Wassail from Ballards and bottles (see below). We will post up a list of additional cask beers when we get time.

We’ve had notice that Mark Justin, a Publican with a Master of Wine, has organised to two very special days at Le Gothique on December 3rd and 4th. Carola Brown from Ballards in Hampshire and Duncan Sambrook from Sambrook’s in Battersea will both be here on Thursday 3rd to talk and field questions about their beers. With Simon Dixon from Shephard Neame on Friday 4th.

Duncan will have both his astoundingly successful “Wandle Ale” plus his long awaited new brew “Junction”. This will be the first time Duncan has had to interact with the public in relation to the new Junction ale.

Historically it was the woman of the household who brewed the beer in days of old. Now Carola Brown finds herself one of the very few female brewers in the UK. She will be making the journey up the A3 to talk and also field questions about her long running success story that is Ballards. With 6% Wassail on tap it should make for a very interesting evening.

Friday between 4pm and 6pm Simon Dixon from Shepherd Neame will be on hand with the Moshi Asahi Ale that was brewed using the same hops and malts as their world brand leader Asahi Japanese lager.

As well as the Sambrooks, Ballards and Shepherd Neame beers there will be a further 20 ales available on rotation from behind the bar.

Both days we will be open from 12 noon with our guest brewers arriving at 4pm & 7pm.on Thursday and 4pm on Friday.

Ballards Nyewood Hampshire

  • Midhurst Mild 3.4%  Dark mild, lightly hopped well malted
  • Ballards Best Bitter 4.2%  Copper coloured malty but dry
  • Ballards Wild 4.7%  Dark porter rich in malt
  • Wassail 6%  Strong full bodied sensational barley wine. Tawny red.

Downton Salisbury, Wiltshire

  • I.P.A. 6.8%  Strong, old style export IPA

Hog’s Back Tongham, Surrey

  • OTT  6.0% A proper Old Ale of distinction. Strong and black
  • A over T 9.0%  A great barley wine. Ruby coloured. Very complex and strong

Leeds Brewery West Yorkshire

  • Gathering Storm 4.4%  Stout with combination of dark roasted malts and subtle hops.

Meantime of Greenwich London

  • London Pale Ale 4.3%

Purity Great Alne Warwichshire

  • Mad Goose 4.2% Light copper colour with zesty citrus overtones. Brewed with Maris Otter Caragold and Wheat malts with Hallertau and Cascade hops. Brewery started in 2005 and may be a future GBG festival winner. One to taste.
  • UBU 4.5%  Pronounced OO-BOO. Uses 100% English Maris Otter malt with Challenger and Cascade hops. Full flavoured and balanced.

Sambrook’s Battersea, London

  • Wandle Ale 3.8%  Amber coloured. Citrus hints and bitterness that lingers to the finish
  • Junction 4.5% New amber premium ale first brewed on November 6th 2009

Shepherd Neame Faversham, Kent

  • Bishops Finger 5.0%  Classic, cask version of famous bottled beer. Strong and complex..
  • Tapping the Admiral 4.0% Brewed only in October celebrating Nelsons victory in 1805
  • Japanese Asahi Ale 4.5% Unique to this festival. A micro brew from Shep’s using strains of yeast and malts normally associated with its Japanese best selling Asahi. Must try.

Twickenham Fine Ales  Twickenham, London

  • Twickenham Original 4.2% Ruby coloured, malty best bitter
  • Naked Ladies 4.4% Hopped with both First Gold and Styrian
  • Grandstand 3.8% Brownish amber session bitter.Well hopped easy drinking
  • Autumn Blaze 4.4%A russet amber colour perfect for autumn.
  • Strange Brew 4.1% Dark golden ale. Hint of spice. Five different hops

The first event from Mark and the team at Le Gothique was in March and was such a roaring success he’s followed it up with his second, this time with a focus on Dark, Winter and Mild ales.

From looking at the full beer list of the 75 ales, we believe he has curated one sweet collection of brews that will be great to try and make it through.

There are several featured breweries, like Downton (proving 7 from their range), Twickenham, Ballards, Shepherd Neame will once again be doing a micro-brew.

The flpa_cacsk_badgeollowing shouldn’t be a surprise to any of our readers but due to the touted generous use of hops (Goldings, Cascade (including a 2nd late hopping) and  Cluster).

One beer we’re keen to try is London Pale Ale from fellow sponsors, Meantime Brewing.  They are calling it a London Pale Ale and watch out for our brewrank on this one.

    Kolsch .45 – sharp, true to style. 14
    Millstone Wheat – fresh, citrus, also true to style. Very drinkable. 14
    Bug Juice West Coast Pale Ale – hoppy, long finish. Nice. 15
    Red Rock Red Ale – wow, very stornly hopped, tight finish. Classic! 16

The host Mark and his team at La Gothique did awesome job and we will be back next time. Did we have a hangover? Yes and it rated 17 out of 20 (or 8.5 on the Richter scale of ale). Here’s what we sampled with rankings out of 20.

    They have published an advance beer list of the beers that will be available for tasting.
