This year at the 2nd Annual Wandsworth Common Beer Festival we are promoting two innovations to the beer festival format. First we take the bold move of listing them all in order of strength. As opposed to alphabetically or by brewery. They range from 3% in 0.1% increments all the way up to 10%. Second we are promoting a series of BEER LADDERS that we will publish over the coming weeks (or suggest your own). These alternative lists (or Ladders) that will give you access to beers of similar strength, colour, style or a theme. A bunch of these ‘ladders’ will be official ones printed up and available at the festival. Others are being posted up and we encourage people to post other ladders, suggestions and commets.

The Myths & Legends Ladder (BeerViking unofficial Ladder No1 ):

Minotaur Mild 3.3% – Milton Cambridge: Red/brown with defined roasted malt nose leading to sweet finish

Napolean’s Retreat 3.9% – Allgates Wigan, Lancashire: A deep golden copper colour. Worth trying

Battleaxe 4.2% – Rudgate Brewery Tockwith, North Yorkshire: More complex than the gravity initially suggests. Gentle bitterness leads to a fruity finish.

Naked Ladies 4.4% – Twichenham Fine Ales Twickenham, London (OFFICIAL GLASS SPONSOR): Hopped with both First Gold and Styrian

Yankee Pale Ale 5.0% – Allgates Brewery of Wigan, Lancashire: American style pale ale with specially imported yeast from USA. Cascade, Chinook and Galena hops combine with the low colour extract of Mari otter malt to give a light colour. Crisp and dry another MUST TRY!

Captain Smith 5.2% - Titanic. Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. Red/brown colour. Full bodied. Good strong finish. A truly excellent beer celebrating the captain who famously went down with his ship.

Lotus IPA 5.7% – Ilkley Ilkley, West Yorkshire. (NEW BREWERY): Only started in 2009. A golden coloured IPA with hoppy, lemon and citrus aromas.

Skullsplitter 8.5% – Orkney. Quoyloo, Orkney Isles: Intense velvet nose with hints of apple, prune & plum. Hoppy but balanced with silky malt & fruity spices. Long dry finish.

Thomas Sykes 10%!!!!- Burton Bridge. Burton on Trent…. The one to finish on. What is so surprising AND dangerous is that it drinks really well without being overly sweet or cloying. Careful…you may want another.

Go home now Or maybe finish off with a Dark Ruby Mild (or insert this at No 8, moving Skull to 9 and Skyes to 10)… Sarah Hughes Sedgely, West Midlands 6.0% Dark Ruby Mild A festival favourite and rightly so. Now brewing at enlarged brewhouse to supply the free trade and festival demand. One of Britains best beers. Do not leave without trying. Dark and complex.

The Belgian Style Brews @ Russian River

Doc D filed the following update into HQ.

Perdition – Biere de Sanoma: very lgith, sublte hints of dry white
wine, good summer or session beer. 12

Damnation – Strong Golden Ale: Fuck amazing want more. 17

Salvation – Dark Strong Ale: fine for winter wrong time of year. Not
going to finish it. 14

Temptation: this reminds me of Orval but even more refined. Super
graphfruity notes. 15

Sanctification – 100% Brettanomyces, 6.25%ABV: ‘lambic’ style to my
taste. Really smooth. 17

Consercration – dark sour aged in oak barrels. 10% abv: ouch can’t
rate too complex. like a whisky.

Publication – Saison 8% abv best of the belgians in this line up today. 18!

Summary

By hitting Russian River and knocking back Pliney the Elder, arguably the prototype American Pale Ale, the guys have started the raid with impeccable standards. As I’m living a vicarious dream from HQ, I for one can’t wait to see what the next couple of days holds.

Back in May I had the pleasure of attending the Beer Academy’s 90 minutes tasting session “Beers over Britain Matched with Food” with a few mates. If you don’t already know about the Beer Academy then be sure to check out their course catalog. The Academy is part of the Institute of Brewing & Distilling. They run a series of courses around the UK for both professionals in the beer trade and beer enthusiasts.

The session we attended included matching some tasty British beers with food. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the food matching part. Time to start a campaign, with all my wine and foodie friends to branch out and to pair more beer with food.

Somehow my tasting notes from the evening got lost along the way home… But I know we started with an Italian Peroni Nastro Azzuro to clear the palette (good choice). Beer No 1 was St Peter’s Organic Ale, always good. Number 2 was Inns & Gunn a first for me, No 3 was White Shield IPA the classic IPA and we finished with Meantime London Porter perfect for the closing out this evening session in central London.

He’Brew Bittersweet Lenny’s RIPA. A 10% double IPA using Rye malt that I have a brewrank of 16 to.

What I Say:

Dark brown beauty. A caramel, grainy with balanced hop coming through nose. From the nose, I was expecting it to be a lot heavier and surprised by a Sweet and Sour (the rye malt?) giving way to what I would have describe as a sweet, cherry, bitter hoppiness, that fades leaving you with a wonderful after taste.

I know this is in effect to be a Double/Imperial IPA but I would suggest that this actually could be considered more along the lines of a Belgian trippel and would be curious to taste it in a flight against such.

What They Say:

Before that, I have to have an additional say with I love the fact that the Shmaltz Brewing Company (who are behind He’brew and Coney Island) published the recipe to this find brew.

Malts: 2-row, Rye Ale Malt, Torrified Rye, Crystal Rye 75, Crystal Malt 65, Wheat, Kiln Amber, Caramel 70

Hops: Warrior, Cascade, Simcoe, Crystal, Chinook, Amarillo, Centennial. Dry Hopped with Amarillo and Crystal

Ladies and Gentlemen, Shmaltz Brewing Co. is proud to introduce Bittersweet Lenny’s R.I.P.A. Brewed with an obscene amount of malts and hops. Shocking flavors – far beyond contemporary community standards. We cooked up the straight dope for the growing minions of our nation’s Radical Beer junkies.
